Annual festivals and events
Mongolians celebrate different types of festivities and events throughout the year. Our company is offering most famous and interesting events that include:
2-3 March – 2020 Ice Festival
Every year on the frozen ice of the Blue Pearl Lake Khuvsgul, Mongolian people celebrate Ice Festival and this is the great opportunity to participate in this unique event. This festival was founded by the local communities for their own amusement, but visitors (tourists) are always welcome to join in. Ice festival involves great variety of activities and competitions including horse sled racing, ice skate racing, Russian jeep racing, ice wrestling and dog sledding. Activities include gathering of local residences, nomads, reindeer herders, shamanic performances, bone fire on the ice, ice sculptures and so on.
5 March – 2020 Eagle Festival
The Eagle festival, or Golden Eagle festival is an annual traditional festival of Mongolian Kazakh nation which is held not far from Ulaanbaatar city. This festival registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Event. During the eagle festival, eagle hunters celebrate and advertise their heritage and compete to catch animals such as foxes, hares and even wolves with specially trained eagles, showing off their skills of the eagle and the trainers. Prizes are awarded for speed, agility and accuracy, as well as for the best traditional Kazakh dress and more.
6-7 March-2020 Thousand Camel Festival
Mongolian people have been celebrating “Thousand Camel Festival” over last couple of years in the heart of the Great Mongolian Gobi. Main goal of this event is to inform people about importance of camels and how important role they play in Mongolian lifestyle and protect them from becoming an endangered species. During this event over 1000 Mongolian two-humped Bactrian camels gather at the same time in a same place and starts with a vivid opening parade where visitors (tourists) can participate. Highlights of this parade are camel racing, camel polo, camel taming, competition of the best appearing camel and best dressed up camel riders and traditional Mongolian music performance. This festival gives you unique opportunity to interact with camel herders and fully understand the Gobi lifestyle.
10-13 July 2020 National holiday “ State Naadam“ Festival
Naadam Festival is the only one of its kind and expresses the nomadic culture. It is the honored celebration of a national independence and it is an outstanding combination of arts and sports. The core of the festivals are the three manly sports which is the the wrestling, horse racing and archery. Embrace many elements of arts, such as the performance of throat singing and the folklore dancing. Naadam Festival begins during the middle of July period of time. Therefore everyone takes the opportunity to witness the opening ceremony showing many shows related to Mongolian history and culture. Come travel to Mongolia with us to experience Naadam Festival which is held only in Mongolia and nowhere else.
10 July – 2020 “Mongolian National Costume” Festival and parade
Mongolian National Costume has a rich history and it is closely connected to Mongolian lifestyle, culture and climate. Every Mongolian ethnic group’s costume has its own features and meanings. In order to advertise our rich history of traditional costume we organize “Mongolian National Costume” festival.
Highlight of this festival is the parade where best-dressed up participants walk through the central square, competing for three nomination prizes – “Best District by Participation”, “Best dressed couple” and “Best dressed foreigner in Mongolian costume” and you will experience traditional Mongolian music and dance performances as well as throat singing. The festival will take place at Chinggis Square, Ulaanbaatar city on 10th of July.
13 July – 2020 “Morin Khuur” traditional music Festival
The Morin Khuur or horse head fiddle, is a traditional Mongolian bowed string instrument. The “Morin Khuur” Festival aims to promote the Morin Khuur, which has been registered as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO, and is considered as a national symbol of Mongolia.
The festival is being held following the Presidential Decree on the “Preservation and Promotion of the Morin Khuur”. The event is designed to encourage and delight those with a casual interest in the traditional Mongolian music as well as expert crafts-persons and musicians. This festival will take place at Chinggis Square, Ulaanbaatar city on 13th of July.
4-5 August 2020 – “Danshig Naadam” cultural Festival
Danshig Naadam is a smaller presentation of the three manly games of Naadam than the State Naadam Festival. Danshig Naadam promotes Mongolian traditions and culture, and aims to preserve Buddhist rituals and congregation dedicated to the wellbeing of the people. The event will also promote tours and traditional items for both domestic and foreign attendees, and call on residents of Ulaanbaatar to safeguard Mongolia’s cultural heritage. In the Danshig Naadam 256/512 wrestlers will compete in wrestling tournament, and the horse races will take a place. The audience will also be able to watch archery and anklebone shooting tournaments and folk performances. This festival is a good opportunity to see the Naadam for those who missed the State Naadam festival right there where it took a place.
16 September 2018 – “The Gobi Marathon”
Another well-known annual event is “International Gobi Marathon” takes place on September 20th in Gobi, the most impressive part of Mongolian territory. Main purpose of this event is to increase public awareness about the Gobi desertification, and raise a fund for supporting preservation activities of a famous site “Bayanzag” where the worlds known explorer Roy Chapman Andrews discovered the first fossilized dinosaur eggs back in 1920. The marathon covers 26.2 miles/42.2 km distance through this worldwide known paleontological site. We are welcoming all our partners and clients to take part in this unique marathon to challenge yourself while visiting one of the 8 wonders of Mongolia.
17-18 September 2020-“Nomad’s Day” Festival
“Nomad’s Day” is the cultural festival where you can enjoy the unique features of Mongolian nomadic culture and traditions. We celebrate this event in Gun Galuut National Reserve every year on 7-8th September and this is the good opportunity to enjoy the renowned Naadam Festival in early autumn.
19-20 september, 3-4 October 2020
-“Golden Eagle ” Festival
Another well-known eagle festival is “Golden Eagle” festival. This is much bigger festival comparing to the other one and takes place in Bayan-Ulgii province which is located in the heart of the Majestic Altai mountain range. In this festival gather about 500 eagle hunters of any age and compete to catch animals such as foxes, hares and even wolves with specially trained golden eagles.
